It's been a little over a year since former CIA computer professional Edward Snowden leaked evidence that the U.S. Government has data collection systems in place for telephone and computer information. Since, there has been some public outcry and speculation as to privacy with technology. Also, within that year time frame there has been more related stories being brought to our attention with big businesses being breached for consumer credit information all the way to explicit celebrity photos being leaked. Just recently Yahoo made headlines with their claim that the government will fine them $250,000 for every day they hold private information from them. With the many ways we store personal information using technology growing everyday it makes you raise the question "how secure is our information?" We seem to only becoming increasingly dependent upon technology for our lives so it's seems to be a topic worth talking about. I want to know what you think. Should we trust our government with gathering endless personal information? Are there things we should or shouldn't trust using technology for? Could it be possible that none of our online activity or information is incapable of being breached, stored or used? Should we even worry?

This brings up a great point that we have only scratched the surface for in my opinion. We all need technology for it makes our lives easier. It is very hard to draw a line on how far the government can reach into our personal life. This is an issue that I feel will stick around for a while.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Lippi. Technology is an invaluable resource but where is the line drawn? I think there has to be give and take from both sides. I understand the government has to be in and regulate technology for our protection. However I also think that we as individuals need to be careful and cautious with that personal information we choose to use interacting with technology. There is human responsibility in this that I think is sometimes forgotten or set aside.
ReplyDeleteThe first question I would ask is whether we believe the Internet should be a free resource available to all without taxation? I ask this because multiple bills have been voted upon in Congress relating to whether the Internet should be taxed, regulated, etc. For example, the Cyber Intelligence and Sharing Protection Act (CISPA).
ReplyDeleteTo answer the question, I don't believe there is a definitive answer. There isn't a perfect balance. However, I do think that we as Americans know when too much is enoogh, and when enough isn't being done as well.
For instance, we learned a great deal about ourselves as well as those who want to harm us following 9/11. Numerous bills were passed to protect the American people. Most notably the PATRIOT Act. Although we do not necessarily know the full scale of the operation behind this bill, we can say that major attacks have been halted because of it.
Now I don't have a stance either way, but I think constant debate and awareness of our surroundings can help push the use of the Internet in a safe and positive direction.
I agree. I do believe this will be a topic around for a long time. There might need to be a give and take relationship established for this powerful of a technology medium too. It seems to be more of a take relationship from the government though; maybe even one of Constitutional Rights??! Thanks for your feedback!
