In the last two years consumers in the tech market have been brought the early stages of a unique and futuristic piece of technology; Smartwatches. The idea of them alone has been around since at least The Jetsons. They were once thought of as unimaginable technology of the future. Since those days technology like Apple's iPhone have blown our minds with what they are all capable of doing and have a functional and fundamental place in our everyday lives. So with so many companies dumping capital into this new product development it makes you wonder what they are capable of. What functional roles could a smart wristwatch play in our future? Samsung's Gear S has fairly large data storage, 3g connectivity, a vibrant display, and fairly good navigation considering how small it is. Could a watch like the Samsung Gear S have some functional use that would give these watches a competitive advantage and a sustainable market or are most of our pressing demands already met with technology like the iPhone, making this smartwatch boom, a bust?

Apple's Event today might just make the smart watch a commodity. The new Apple Watch is an incredible new piece that raises the bar for wearable technology.

I would be interested to hear a first hand view from someone who owns a smartwatch what the pros and cons are to using one. They seem like really cool things but also a very expensive technology to be wearing on your wrist.
ReplyDeleteI would love to test one out of these watches to see if they are as functional as these posts make it seem. If they get to a great level of functionality these watches could even replace the need to carry a cell phone everywhere. I definitely think that these smartwatches have a place in the future.
ReplyDeleteWhen I think of the smartwatches, I think of the introduction stage that the product resides in. The industry for smartwatches hasn't grown yet, and many consumers barely know anything about them--how they work, what services they provide, etc. However, I don't think that they will be a bust. For instance, take a look at the tablet industry. The iPad was among the first to be introduced and it had trumedous sales in the beginning. Although sales have slowed, more and more companies have now produced multiple models. Slowly, they have been growing among consumers and becoming more of a 'normal' product. So I think of the smartwatch becoming a product like the iPad. It just takes time, and the industry and infrastructure for smartwatches isn't quite built yet.
ReplyDeleteYes, I do believe Apple has changed the game with their new watch as they do with most of their technology. I am interested also in seeing the first generation of these products being tested and reviewed by consumers. I like the comparison to the iPad also. It wasn't a product that you were sure would hold it's place in the market but, it has. I wonder if it's worth investing in first generation technology like such or waiting until it can be improved? Just a thought.
ReplyDeleteThis is something that I would love to have and to try to see if it the results are really true, but a concern that I have will others be able to track me. If I had to option to try this, I would love to, since I bike a lot. I might I will have to read more about this, but it looks like something that I would buy if I had the money.
ReplyDeleteYes, they could potentially track you but, they could also do this through your phone if they wanted too.
