US Air Force Develops “Fly-Bot”

The United State Air Force has been working on the development of a drone that looks like an insect.  Their original goal was to create a bird-like drone.  In hopes that it would blend in with nature and go undetected.   With technology advances the Air Force was able to produce something much smaller than a bird-like drone.  An insect size drone was made.  As shown in the picture below, it is smaller than your finger tip.

This drone is still controlled by a trained pilot at a remote terminal.  These drones could release small amounts of gas.  Another option would be that these drones could be packed with high power explosives.  These drones could do damage if there were a swarm of them.

I think this is a good idea.  I certainly would not think something so small would oppose much of a threat.  Do you think this is worth investing in?  How effective do you think these new drones would be?

  1. I definitely think this is something worth investing in. It could be used in missions to help assist military strategists on what to do next. It would also reduce the number of casualties. Small instruments like these are something that could revolutionize the spying industry (for good or for worse). My hope is that they stay in the military and are never used by the police!

  2. I've honestly been surprised that we have not seen more of this in the world. I can definitely see it's usefulness in the military. A small bug like this one could easily contain a microphone that could listen in on enemy conversations. Something similar in size should also be able to take a camera into areas that aerial surveillance cannot see. Additionally, I believe that these could be useful to ground troops for helping identify nearby enemy locations and mission objectives. These are just a few reasons why I am confident that the military will continue such developments. Unfortunately, nearly everything that the military uses eventually makes it to the private sector and I'me sure that this will be no exception.

  3. I completely agree that we need to be investing in these more. The smaller the better I think when it comes to these drones. I think this will cause positive effects. When there is a little bug flying around you do not ever think that it could be a drone! That is actually probably the last thing I would think actually. Even though one drone would not do too much damage a swarm could definitely cause damage. I would think that these drones would be a lot cheaper to make than the drones we are currently using. I also would think it would save money as well since the enemies wouldn't have a clue it was a drone, therefore they would probably not cause damage to them.

  4. This technology is incredible and has a lot of potential, it just makes you wonder how it could be used against us. Surveillance, invasion of privacy, etc.
